The WTS didn't want to have to collect and remit sales tax because it would allow outsiders access to all the financial information. Any decent sales tax auditor would want to see total receipts data, as well as purchase data to verify that the reported figures were accurate. That would reveal just how much profit was being generated, and could even trigger the auditor to look at other purchases and the general business operations to determine if the corporation even qualified as a religion. Since the WTS seems to be fond of using multiple layers of corporations, a really thorough auditor would have a field day combing through the records. Don't forget the issue of food service at conventions - the fact that they preferred to cancel food service rather than have to remit sales tax tells me that they didn't want to risk an audit. Even though audit information is supposed to be confidential, I think they were still scared at the idea that their dirty laundry would get out.

I could never bring myself to totally purge my music collection. Even at my hard core dubbiest, certain songs still made my heart soar and I couldn't turn them off. I never stopped watching crime dramas like Law & Order - I justified it to myself by saying that the bad guys were always shown as bad, and they always got caught.

the latest evidence is the january 2013 watchtower which rolls out hugely predictable statements about not doing anything to upset one's (jw) family by, for example, being in email contact with a disfellowshipped witness.

it's hard to stifle the yawns.

I agree with Steve's comment about the quality of the relationship prior to the DF or DA affecting how completely the shunning rule is followed, but I believe there is also another factor - the basic personality of the shunner. If that person naturally sees things in a very black or white manner, they are more likely to shun completely (or ignore the rule completely) than someone who sees the shades of gray. Also, a person who is very submissive may push their own feelings down and follow the WTS instructions to the letter.

Just Ron pretended to 100% believe the pap spewed from the platform and in the rags for 10 years. We had an issue back in 2002 with an elder who lied and cost us a business deal. At that point, Just Ron was ready to walk away, but I was still completely blind. He backed off when one of the other elders who was "shepherding" me made the statement that the congregation would support me if I chose to divorce him. He has said that preserving our marriage was his top priority and everything else had to take a back seat. He had no idea if or when I would wake up, and he was really afraid to try to push me towards the door. The only thing he did, that in retrospect had to be designed to make me want out of the borg, was to try to push me to be active in field service. I had been inactive in field service since 2007. I don't know the best way for you to proceed, or how to get through to your wife - I think it's a very individual thing, but I wanted you to know that there is hope.

i've known so many who have decided to abandon ship at either the age of 30 or either after 30 years of being baptized.

i fall into the former category.

I was 28 when I got sucked into the Borg, and 41 when I woke up. I think the whole idea of my own mortality just scared me out of my senses and I went running to a group that promised I wouldn't really have to die.
